People search for a “forklift license” all the time — but technically, there’s no such thing. There is no government-issued forklift license the way there’s a driver’s license. What the law actually requires is OSHA forklift certification. Here’s what that means and what you actually need.
There is no federal or state “forklift license”
You don’t get a forklift license from the DMV or any government agency. Forklifts are operated in workplaces, and workplace safety is governed by OSHA, not a licensing board. So when people say “forklift license,” what they legally need is certification.
What OSHA certification actually is
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), employers must ensure each forklift operator is trained, evaluated, and certified as competent to operate safely. Certification means the employer has documentation that the operator completed formal instruction, hands-on training, and a workplace evaluation. It’s the employer’s legal responsibility — but operators can complete the training and testing portions themselves, online.
“License” and “certification” are used interchangeably
In everyday language, “forklift license,” “forklift card,” and “forklift certification” all refer to the same thing: proof that you’ve been trained and evaluated to OSHA’s standard. So if a job posting asks for a “forklift license,” an OSHA-compliant certification satisfies it.
What you actually need to operate a forklift
- Formal instruction (can be online)
- A passed written evaluation (can be online)
- A hands-on evaluation by your employer
- A certificate on file, renewed at least every 3 years
No DMV, no road test. You can complete the training and testing with US Forklift Certification in about 30 minutes for $58. New here? Start with our guide on how to get forklift certified.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a license to drive a forklift?
Not a government license. You need OSHA-compliant certification from your employer, which includes training, testing, and a workplace evaluation.
Is a forklift certification the same as a license?
Functionally, yes — the terms are used interchangeably. The legal requirement is certification under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178.
How long is it good for?
Three years, then re-evaluation is required (or sooner after an incident or equipment change).
