Wisconsin Forklift Certification Requirements

Wisconsin is not an OSHA-approved State Plan state. Private-sector workplaces across Wisconsin fall under federal OSHA, which enforces the powered industrial truck standard at 29 CFR 1910.178. Public-sector workers (state and local government) are covered separately by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), whose Division of Industry Services establishes and enforces occupational safety standards for public employees in line with federal OSHA requirements. Whether you drive a lift in a private plant or a municipal facility, the operator training rules described below are the standard you must meet.

What OSHA requires of Wisconsin forklift operators

Federal OSHA does not issue a personal “license.” Instead, your employer must train and certify each operator using a three-part program before that person operates a lift alone:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, or online coursework covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, and OSHA rules.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises performed on the actual type of forklift the operator will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor watches the operator run the lift in the real work environment and confirms competence.

The employer must keep a written certification record showing the operator’s name, the trainer/evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and of the evaluation. This record must be available if federal OSHA inspects the site.

How often re-certification is required in Wisconsin

OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator’s performance at least once every three years. Refresher training is also required sooner whenever an operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or when workplace conditions change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course delivers the formal-instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour, runs on any phone, tablet, or computer, and your certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because hands-on skills can only be judged in person, the employer completes the practical training and workplace evaluation on-site — our Train-and-Certify employer kit gives supervisors the checklists and forms to finish those steps and document the full certification.

From the machinery, paper, and food and dairy plants of the Fox Valley to the manufacturing and distribution corridors around Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay, Wisconsin runs on forklifts — and on operators who are trained to OSHA’s standard.
