Tennessee Forklift Certification Requirements

Tennessee operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan rather than deferring to federal OSHA. Workplace safety for forklift operators is enforced by the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA), a division of the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development. TOSHA covers both private-sector employers and state and local government workplaces across Tennessee, and it adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178). In practice, that means the operator-training rules you must meet in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga mirror the federal baseline — enforced by state compliance officers.

What TOSHA requires of forklift operators

Under the standard TOSHA enforces, an operator must be trained and evaluated before running a forklift on the job. Certification is built on three parts:

  • Formal instruction — the classroom-style knowledge portion covering forklift operation, stability, load handling, refueling, pedestrian safety, and OSHA rules. This can be delivered by lecture, video, or online coursework.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and supervised exercises where the operator actually runs the truck they’ll use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a designated evaluator watches the operator perform in the real work environment and confirms they can operate safely.

The employer must keep a written record documenting the operator’s name, the trainer’s name, the dates of training, and the date of the evaluation. This record must be available if a TOSHA compliance officer asks to see it.

How often re-certification is required in Tennessee

TOSHA requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and re-evaluation are also triggered sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course delivers the formal instruction portion — the knowledge training TOSHA requires. It takes about an hour, works on any phone, tablet, or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years and recognized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because the hands-on practical training and workplace evaluation must happen on the actual equipment, those steps are completed by the employer. Our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to finish and document those steps in-house.

From FedEx’s Memphis SuperHub — anchored at one of the world’s busiest cargo airports — to the auto and distribution plants around Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, Tennessee runs on forklifts. Getting operators trained quickly and documented correctly keeps your crews moving and your sites TOSHA-ready.
