South Dakota Forklift Certification Requirements

South Dakota does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector employers across the state fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction, administered through the Sioux Falls Area Office as part of OSHA Region 8. That means the forklift rules for a warehouse in Sioux Falls or a processing plant in Rapid City are the same federal standard applied nationwide: 29 CFR 1910.178, OSHA’s powered industrial truck requirement.

What OSHA requires of South Dakota forklift operators

OSHA does not issue forklift licenses. Instead, the employer is responsible for training and certifying each operator through a three-part program before that person drives a lift on the job:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online learning covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, and refueling or charging.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and supervised driving exercises using the same type of truck the operator will run.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor observes the operator performing real tasks in the actual work environment and confirms competency.

The employer must keep a written record certifying each operator by name, the training and evaluation dates, and the identity of the person who conducted the evaluation. That record is what an OSHA compliance officer from the Sioux Falls office will ask to see during an inspection.

How often re-certification is required in South Dakota

OSHA requires operators to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is also required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course satisfies the formal instruction portion of OSHA’s requirement. It takes about an hour, runs on any device, and issues a certificate valid for three years and recognized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA requires a hands-on skills check on your own equipment, the employer completes the practical training and workplace evaluation — our employer Train-and-Certify kit provides the evaluation checklists and documentation to finish and record that step.

From the Smithfield pork plant and distribution centers around Sioux Falls to agriculture, construction, and Black Hills tourism operations near Rapid City, South Dakota’s forklift demand is steady — and this course gets your operators started fast, for less.
