Start Certification — $58 →Forklift safety rules in Ohio depend on who you work for. Most private-sector employers — warehouses, factories, distribution centers, and retailers — fall under federal OSHA, because Ohio is not an OSHA-approved State Plan for private industry. Public-sector workplaces are different: state and local government employees are covered by Ohio’s Public Employment Risk Reduction Program (PERRP), administered by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation under Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4167. Either way, the powered-industrial-truck training rules are the same, because PERRP adopts and enforces the federal OSHA standards, including 29 CFR 1910.178.
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), no one may operate a powered industrial truck until the employer has trained and evaluated them. Certification has three parts:
The employer must keep a written record showing the operator’s name, the trainer or evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. Training must also be specific to the truck type and the actual workplace, not generic.
An operator’s performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner whenever an operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.
Our $58 online course satisfies the formal instruction portion of OSHA’s requirement. It takes about an hour from any phone or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because the standard also requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on the specific truck, the employer must complete those final steps — our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and forms to do it and keep proper records.
