Start Certification — $58 →North Carolina runs its own OSHA-approved State Plan, administered by the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division of the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL). The plan covers most private-sector employers plus state and local government workplaces, and it adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, as the rule NC OSH enforces for forklift operators statewide.
Under 1910.178(l), an operator cannot run a forklift until the employer has trained and certified them through three connected parts:
The employer must document the certification with the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the person who conducted the training and evaluation. NC OSH inspectors can ask to see these records, so keep them on file for every operator.
Each operator must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher training is also required sooner whenever an operator is seen operating unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.
Our $58 online course covers the formal-instruction portion of 1910.178 — the classroom knowledge OSHA and NC OSH require. It runs about an hour on any phone, tablet, or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because federal rules require hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your own equipment, the employer completes those final steps; our employer Train-and-Certify kit provides the checklists and evaluation forms to document them properly.
