Start Certification — $58 →Who enforces forklift training in New York depends on where you work. New York operates an OSHA-approved State Plan that covers only state and local government (public-sector) workers, administered by the Public Employee Safety and Health (PESH) Bureau of the New York State Department of Labor. Most private-sector employers — warehouses, manufacturers, ports, distributors and construction firms — fall under federal OSHA, whose standards apply directly in the state. Whichever authority covers your job site, both enforce the same powered-industrial-truck training standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, so the operator requirements below are identical.
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), an operator must complete three connected parts before being authorized to drive:
The employer must keep a written record certifying each operator. That record includes the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date, and the name of the person(s) who conducted the training and evaluation.
Certification is not one-and-done. Each operator’s performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner whenever an operator drives unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.
Our $58 online course completes the formal-instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour from any phone or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the US, Canada and Mexico. Because federal OSHA and PESH both require site-specific hands-on training and evaluation, your employer performs the practical exercises and workplace evaluation on the equipment you’ll actually use — our employer Train-and-Certify kit provides the checklists and evaluation forms to document that step and complete the record.
