New Mexico Forklift Certification Requirements

New Mexico is one of about two dozen states that runs its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Workplace safety here is administered by the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB), a bureau within the New Mexico Environment Department, which enforces the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Act. The plan covers private-sector employers as well as state, county, and city government workplaces, and it has adopted the federal OSHA standards by reference. That means the powered industrial truck rule (29 CFR 1910.178) that governs forklift operator training applies statewide, from an Albuquerque distribution center to an oilfield yard in the Permian Basin.

What New Mexico OSHA requires of forklift operators

Under the standard OHSB enforces, no one may operate a forklift on the job until the employer certifies they have completed a three-part training program:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online lessons covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrians, refueling, and hazard recognition.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises where the operator actually runs the type of truck they will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor or qualified trainer watches the operator perform on the actual equipment and site, then signs off on competency.

The employer must keep a written certification record showing the operator’s name, the trainer’s or evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. New Mexico does not issue forklift licenses itself — certification is the employer’s responsibility to document and retain.

How often re-certification is required in New Mexico

Operators must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and a new evaluation are also required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course satisfies the formal-instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour on any phone, tablet, or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA also requires hands-on practical training and a workplace evaluation, the employer completes those final steps on site — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives you the evaluation checklists and records to do it correctly.

From oil and gas crews around Hobbs and Carlsbad, to the national labs and aerospace shops near Albuquerque and Santa Fe, to the Santa Teresa border manufacturing hub outside Las Cruces, New Mexico employers rely on this fast, affordable path to compliant forklift operators.
