Montana Forklift Certification Requirements

Montana does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces across the state fall under federal OSHA, administered locally by the OSHA Billings Area Office, which covers all of Montana’s counties. That means forklift operators in Billings, Missoula, Bozeman, Great Falls and everywhere in between are held to the federal Powered Industrial Truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l). (One exception: workers at Montana’s mines are regulated by MSHA, not OSHA, and follow separate rules.)

What OSHA requires of Montana forklift operators

Federal OSHA requires every forklift operator to be trained and evaluated before operating a truck on the job. Certification is built from three parts:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style learning covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety and OSHA rules. This can be delivered online, by video, in a lecture or through written materials.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises where the operator actually runs the type of truck they will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a qualified person watches the operator perform in the real work environment and confirms they can do the job safely.

The employer must keep a written record of certification that includes the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date, and the name of the person who did the training and evaluation. There is no OSHA-issued license or wallet card requirement — the employer’s record is the proof of compliance.

How often re-certification is required in Montana

OSHA requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training must also happen sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course takes about an hour, runs on any device, and satisfies the formal-instruction portion of 29 CFR 1910.178(l). It does not, by itself, complete certification: the employer must still provide the hands-on practical training and the workplace evaluation. To make that simple, our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to finish the hands-on steps and document everything. Certificates are valid for three years and recognized across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

From the ranches and grain operations of the eastern plains to the oil refineries around Billings, the lumber and wood-products yards of the west, and the busy distribution and tourism hubs in Missoula, Bozeman and Great Falls, Montana employers count on properly certified forklift operators. Start the formal training today and get your crew compliant.
