Kentucky Forklift Certification Requirements

Kentucky is one of the states that runs its own OSHA-approved workplace-safety program rather than relying on federal OSHA directly. Powered industrial truck (forklift) safety is enforced by Kentucky OSH, administered by the Department of Workplace Standards within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet in Frankfort. The state plan covers both private-sector and state and local government workplaces. Under House Bill 398 (effective June 27, 2025), Kentucky OSH enforces standards identical to federal OSHA — so the forklift operator training rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(l), applies statewide exactly as the federal version reads.

What Kentucky OSH requires of forklift operators

Kentucky OSH follows the federal three-part model. Before an employee operates a forklift on the job, the employer must provide and document all three:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online learning covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, refueling/charging, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises performed on the actual type of forklift the operator will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor or qualified evaluator watches the operator run the truck in the real work environment and confirms competency.

The employer must keep a training record that includes the operator’s name, the trainer/evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and of the most recent evaluation. Kentucky OSH inspectors can ask to see these records.

How often re-certification is required in Kentucky

An operator’s performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is also required sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course takes about an hour on any phone or computer and delivers the formal-instruction portion of the requirement. The certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because federal and Kentucky rules require hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your specific equipment, your employer completes those final steps — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to do exactly that.

From the Toyota plant in Georgetown and Ford’s assembly lines in Louisville to the UPS Worldport air hub — one of the largest automated package facilities anywhere — plus the bourbon distilleries and logistics warehouses around Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky’s economy runs on forklifts and on operators who are trained the right way.
