Who is responsible for forklift training: the agency or the client?
Both. OSHA’s Temporary Worker Initiative Bulletin No. 7 on powered industrial trucks says the staffing agency and the host employer share responsibility for making sure a temporary worker is trained and evaluated before driving a forklift. In practice OSHA describes the split this way:
- Staffing agency: generally provides the generic forklift training and confirms the worker is competent in general operation.
- Host employer (your client): provides site-specific training and evaluates the worker on its own trucks and in its own facility before the worker operates them.
- Both: talk to each other about the tasks, trucks and hazards involved. Re-evaluation is required at least every three years under 29 CFR 1910.178(l).
Our course covers the formal instruction and written test, the generic part that typically falls to the agency. The hands-on evaluation on the client’s equipment stays with the client.
How it works for your placements
- Buy the number of seats you need. Team pricing applies automatically at checkout.
- Send each candidate the course. They enter their own name and take it in English or Spanish.
- Their certificate and wallet card print when they pass, dated and valid for three years. Keep a copy in the worker’s file and send one to the client.
- The client completes the practical evaluation on its own trucks before the worker operates them.
Questions staffing agencies ask
Does the certificate go with the worker to the next placement?
The certificate records the formal instruction and written test, and it is valid for three years. Each new host employer still has to evaluate the worker on its own equipment before the worker drives there.
Can I buy seats now and use them as I place people?
Yes. Buy the quantity you need, and each seat is used when that candidate takes the course.
Is it available in Spanish?
Yes. The Spanish course is the same course at the same price.
We place 20 or more operators a month. Is there a better option?
Call 866-556-8732, Monday–Friday, 9–5 CST. For branches with an in-house trainer, the Train-the-Trainer Kit removes the per-seat cost entirely.
