Delaware Forklift Certification Requirements

Delaware does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces across the First State fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction, administered locally by the OSHA Wilmington Area Office (part of OSHA’s Philadelphia regional operations). That means every powered industrial truck operator in Delaware — from the docks in Wilmington to a poultry plant in Sussex County — is trained and certified to the federal standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l). There is no separate state forklift license to obtain.

What OSHA requires of Delaware forklift operators

Federal law requires that operators complete a three-part program before running a lift truck on the job:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online lessons covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises performed on the actual type of truck the operator will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor observes the operator driving in the real work environment and confirms competency.

The employer must keep a written record of certification that includes the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the person who conducted the evaluation. OSHA can request this record during an inspection, so it must be kept current for each certified operator.

How often re-certification is required in Delaware

OSHA requires a re-evaluation of every operator’s performance at least once every three years. Refresher training must happen sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. Our certificate reflects this three-year cycle and is recognized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course takes about an hour on any phone, tablet, or computer and delivers the formal instruction portion of the OSHA requirement — the classroom knowledge every operator needs. Because federal law requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on the specific equipment used, the employer completes those final steps on site. Employers training a whole crew can use our Train-and-Certify kit, which supplies the evaluation checklists and documentation to finish and record certification correctly.
