Georgia Forklift Certification Requirements

Georgia does not run its own OSHA-approved State Plan for private-sector employers. Workplace safety across the state is enforced directly by federal OSHA, operating out of the Atlanta East, Atlanta West, and Savannah area offices. That means forklift operators in Georgia are certified under the federal Powered Industrial Trucks standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l)—the same rule applied nationwide.

What OSHA requires of Georgia forklift operators

Federal OSHA holds the employer responsible for training and certifying every powered-industrial-truck operator before they work unsupervised. Certification isn’t a single test—it’s built from three required parts:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, written material, or an online course covering truck operation, stability, load handling, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and exercises performed by the operator on the actual type of truck they’ll use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a qualified evaluator watches the operator run the truck in the real work environment and confirms they can do it safely.

Once all three are complete, the employer must keep a written record showing the operator’s name, the trainer’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. OSHA can ask to see this record during any Georgia inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Georgia

Operator performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner whenever an operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course satisfies the formal-instruction portion of OSHA’s requirement. In about an hour—from any phone or computer—the operator earns a certificate valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA requires hands-on evaluation on the specific truck at the actual job site, the employer completes the practical training and workplace evaluation. Our Train-and-Certify kit gives employers the checklists and forms to document that final step correctly.
