Start Certification — $58 →Washington does not follow federal OSHA directly. It operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), administered by the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) through its Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). DOSH covers most private-sector employers plus state and local government workplaces, and it sets forklift operator rules that are at least as effective as the federal standard. The powered-industrial-truck rule lives in the Washington Administrative Code, Chapter 296-863, “Forklifts and other powered industrial trucks.”
Under WAC 296-863, an operator cannot drive a forklift on the job until the employer has trained and certified them for that specific truck and workplace. DOSH requires three parts:
The employer must keep a written record certifying each operator. That record includes the operator’s name, the trainer’s or evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. DOSH inspectors can ask to see it, so it should be current and on file.
Washington requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and new evaluation are also triggered sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. There is no separate state-issued license — certification is granted by the employer once all three parts are complete.
Our $58 online course delivers the formal instruction portion that WAC 296-863 requires. It runs about one hour on any phone, tablet, or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years and recognized across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because DOSH still requires hands-on practical training and a workplace evaluation on your actual equipment, the employer completes those final steps — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit provides the checklists and evaluation forms to document them and close out the record.
From the Northwest Seaport Alliance terminals at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma to aerospace plants, warehouses, and the agricultural operations of the Yakima and Columbia valleys, Washington employers rely on certified operators.
