Start Certification — $58 →Utah does not rely on federal OSHA to enforce workplace safety. The state operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan through the Utah Occupational Safety and Health division (UOSH), a division of the Utah Labor Commission. First approved in 1973, the Utah plan covers private-sector employers as well as state and local government workplaces, and it adopts and enforces the federal powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178. If you operate a forklift anywhere from Salt Lake City to Provo, your training must meet that standard.
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), an operator cannot be turned loose on a lift truck until the employer certifies competency through three connected parts:
The employer must then keep a written certification record listing the operator’s name, the trainer or evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. UOSH inspectors can ask to see this record at any time.
Forklift certification in Utah is not permanent. Each operator must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and new evaluation are also required sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.
Our $58 online OSHA forklift course delivers the formal-instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour on any phone, tablet or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Because the standard also requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation, the employer completes those steps on-site — and our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to document them and finish the record UOSH expects.
From the distribution centers and Utah Inland Port operations feeding the I-15 corridor to warehouses in West Valley City, Silicon Slopes manufacturers in Provo, and mining and freight sites across the state, Salt Lake City’s role as a logistics hub keeps trained forklift operators in constant demand.
