North Dakota Forklift Certification Requirements

North Dakota does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector employers and workers across the state fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction, administered by the OSHA Bismarck Area Office, which covers both North and South Dakota. That means the powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, is the rule that governs forklift operator training everywhere from a Fargo warehouse to a Williston Basin oilfield yard. North Dakota adds no separate state forklift license on top of it.

What OSHA requires of North Dakota forklift operators

Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), no employee may operate a powered industrial truck until they have been trained and evaluated. OSHA requires a three-part program:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, written material, or interactive online coursework covering OSHA rules, truck controls, stability, load handling, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and operation of the actual truck by the trainee.
  • Workplace evaluation — the employer observes the operator running the equipment in the real work setting and confirms they can do it safely.

The employer must certify each operator and keep a record that includes the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date, and the name of the person who did the training and evaluation. Training must also be specific to the truck type and the conditions of the site.

How often re-certification is required in North Dakota

OSHA requires an operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner whenever an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or when workplace conditions change in a way that affects safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course satisfies the formal instruction portion of 29 CFR 1910.178. It takes about an hour, works on any device, and issues a certificate valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because federal OSHA requires hands-on training and a site-specific evaluation on your actual equipment, the employer completes that final step. Our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to document it correctly.

From Bakken shale oil and gas operations near Williston to wheat and soybean handling, food processing, and wind-energy logistics in Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks, North Dakota runs on forklifts. Employers can also tap the free North Dakota On-Site Consultation Program for confidential safety guidance while your operators get certified fast and stay compliant.
