Nebraska Forklift Certification Requirements

Nebraska does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector employers and forklift (powered industrial truck) operators across the state fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction, administered locally by the OSHA Omaha Area Office in Region 7. That means the rules for training and certifying a lift-truck operator in Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island or anywhere else in Nebraska come straight from the federal standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l).

What OSHA requires of Nebraska forklift operators

OSHA does not issue a license or a card itself. Instead, it requires the employer to make sure every operator is trained and evaluated as competent before operating a truck. Certification has three parts:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style learning covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety and workplace hazards. This can be delivered by lecture, video or an online course.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises performed by the operator on the actual type of truck they will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor or qualified trainer watches the operator run the truck in their real work environment and confirms they can do it safely.

The employer must keep a written record for each operator that includes the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the person who did the training and evaluation.

How often re-certification is required in Nebraska

OSHA requires a fresh evaluation of each operator at least once every three years. A refresher and re-evaluation must also happen sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA course covers the formal instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour, works on any phone, tablet or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Because federal rules require hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your own equipment, the employer completes those final steps — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives you the checklists and evaluation forms to document them.

From beef and pork processing plants and grain and ag operations across the state, to the Union Pacific rail network headquartered in Omaha and Bailey Yard in North Platte — the world’s largest railroad classification yard — to distribution centers around Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska runs on forklifts. Get your operators trained and OSHA-compliant today.
