Minnesota Forklift Certification Requirements

Minnesota operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan, known as Minnesota OSHA (MNOSHA), administered by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) from St. Paul. Unlike federal-only states, MNOSHA covers both private-sector employers and state and local government workplaces. For powered industrial trucks, MNOSHA adopts and enforces the federal standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, so every forklift operator in Minnesota must be trained, evaluated, and certified before operating a lift on the job.

What MNOSHA requires of forklift operators

MNOSHA follows the three-part training model built into 29 CFR 1910.178(l). A Minnesota operator is only certified once all three pieces are complete:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style learning covering OSHA rules, truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, and workplace hazards. This can be delivered online, by lecture, or through video.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and exercises where the operator actually drives and maneuvers the specific type of truck they will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a qualified evaluator watches the operator perform in the real work environment and confirms they can run the equipment safely.

The employer must also keep a written training record that documents the operator’s name, the trainer’s or evaluator’s name, the date of training, and the date of the evaluation. MNOSHA compliance officers can ask to see this record during an inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Minnesota

MNOSHA requires that each operator’s performance be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher training and a new evaluation are also required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course delivers the formal-instruction portion of MNOSHA’s requirement. It takes about an hour, runs on any phone, tablet, or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because federal and MNOSHA rules require hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on the actual equipment, your employer completes those final steps — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors everything they need to run and document the practical evaluation.

From Twin Cities distribution centers in Minneapolis and St. Paul to food processing and agricultural operations statewide, medical-device manufacturing, and mining and shipping along Duluth and the Iron Range, Minnesota employers rely on certified operators every day. Start the formal instruction online today and get your team compliant with MNOSHA.
