Michigan Forklift Certification Requirements

Michigan does not rely on federal OSHA to police most workplaces. It runs its own OSHA-approved State Plan through the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), a division of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). MIOSHA covers both private-sector and state and local government employers, and it enforces its own powered industrial truck rules — General Industry Safety Standard Part 21 and Construction Safety Standard Part 13 — which mirror the federal forklift requirements Michigan employers must meet.

What MIOSHA requires of forklift operators

Under Part 21, no employee may operate a powered industrial truck until the employer has trained and evaluated that person. MIOSHA requires three connected pieces:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, discussion, written material, video, or interactive computer learning covering truck controls, capacities, inspection, and operating hazards. This is the classroom portion, and it can be completed online.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and supervised practice on the actual type of truck the operator will use at that worksite.
  • Workplace evaluation — a competent evaluator watches the operator run the truck under real conditions and confirms they can do the job safely before authorizing them.

MIOSHA also requires a record. The certification must document the operator’s name, the date of training, the date of the evaluation, and the identity of the person(s) who conducted the training and evaluation. Michigan employers typically issue a powered industrial truck operator permit that lists the truck types authorized and its expiration date.

How often re-certification is required in Michigan

Each operator’s performance must be re-evaluated at least once every three years, before the permit is renewed. Refresher training is required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, receives an unsatisfactory evaluation, is assigned a different type of truck, or if workplace conditions change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course delivers the formal-instruction portion MIOSHA requires. It takes about an hour on any phone or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the US, Canada, and Mexico. Because MIOSHA also mandates hands-on training and a workplace evaluation, your employer completes those final steps on-site — our employer Train-and-Certify kit provides the checklists, evaluation forms, and records to do exactly that.

From auto-manufacturing and parts plants in Detroit, Warren, and Lansing to the warehouses and distribution centers around Grand Rapids, Michigan runs on forklifts — and MIOSHA-compliant operators keep those docks and floors moving safely.
