The Port of Baltimore is the nation’s top port for automobiles and farm equipment, with Roll-on/Roll-off operations driving significant forklift employment. The redevelopment of Sparrows Point—once America’s largest steel mill—into Tradepoint Atlantic has created a new logistics hub. Certified forklift operators across this 2.8-million person metro serve a diverse economy spanning port operations to pharmaceutical distribution.

Port of Baltimore’s auto processing facilities handle over 800,000 vehicles annually, requiring trained operators for precision driving and handling of high-value cargo. Amazon has invested heavily at Sparrows Point and throughout Anne Arundel County. McCormick’s headquarters presence drives food distribution employment, while proximity to Washington, D.C. adds defense and government-related logistics opportunities.

Baltimore Forklift Certification Requirements

Baltimore operators fall under Maryland’s own OSHA-approved state plan. Forklift training is enforced by Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), part of the Maryland Department of Labor, rather than by federal OSHA. MOSH covers both private-sector employers and state and local government workplaces, and it adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard — so the rules mirror federal OSHA while being enforced at the state level across the Baltimore metro.

What MOSH requires of Baltimore forklift operators

In Maryland, an employer may only allow operators who have completed a proper training program to run a forklift. A complete certification has three parts:

  • Formal instruction — the classroom or online knowledge portion: lecture, written materials, and a written test.
  • Practical training — hands-on exercises on the same type of forklift the operator will actually use.
  • Workplace evaluation — the employer observes the operator performing the job in the real Baltimore work environment.

The employer must keep a written record showing the operator’s name, the trainer’s name, and the dates of the training and the evaluation.

How often re-certification is required

Operators must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner if an operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned to a different type of forklift, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits in Baltimore

Our $58 online course delivers the OSHA-compliant formal-instruction portion MOSH requires — the knowledge training and written test — completed in about an hour from any phone or computer. Because the state also requires a hands-on evaluation on the specific truck in your actual workplace, the employer completes that final step on site. Employers certifying a full crew can use our Train-and-Certify kit, which supplies the evaluation checklist and documentation to finish and record that step for every operator.

With the Port of Baltimore’s container and roll-on/roll-off terminals, distribution centers along the I-95 corridor, and a strong healthcare and manufacturing base, Baltimore keeps certified forklift operators in steady demand.
