Maryland Forklift Certification Requirements

Workplace safety in Maryland is regulated by Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), one of the OSHA-approved State Plans. MOSH operates under the Division of Labor and Industry within the Maryland Department of Labor, and it covers both private-sector and state and local government workplaces across the state. Because MOSH adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178), the rules for training and certifying forklift operators in Maryland mirror federal OSHA requirements.

What MOSH requires of forklift operators

Under the standard MOSH enforces, an operator cannot be certified on classroom knowledge alone. Employers must complete a three-part program before an operator drives a lift truck unsupervised:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, written material, or online coursework covering safe operation, load handling, stability, pedestrian hazards, and refueling or charging.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer plus supervised practice where the operator actually runs the equipment.
  • Workplace evaluation — a documented performance check confirming the operator can safely handle the specific truck type and conditions at your Maryland site.

MOSH also expects the employer to keep a training record that lists the operator’s name, the trainer’s name, and the dates of both the training and the evaluation. That record must be available to inspectors on request.

How often re-certification is required in Maryland

Operators must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and new evaluation are also required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. There is no separate Maryland state license — certification comes from the employer once all three parts are complete.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course delivers the formal-instruction portion MOSH requires. It runs about one hour, works on any phone, tablet, or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The hands-on practical training and the workplace evaluation must still be conducted on-site by the employer — so we also offer an employer “Train-and-Certify” kit with everything a supervisor needs to run and document that final step.

From the roll-on/roll-off terminals and distribution warehouses of the Port of Baltimore to the logistics corridors along I-95 and BWI Marshall and the food and beverage plants across the Baltimore region, trained forklift operators are in constant demand. Get the formal instruction done today, then finish certification at your own facility.
