Start Certification — $58 →Maine operates an OSHA-approved State Plan, but it is one of a handful of plans that cover public-sector workers only. The Maine Department of Labor — through its SafetyWorks! program — enforces occupational safety rules for state and local government employees. If you work for a private employer in Maine (a mill, a shipyard, a distribution center, a seafood plant), you fall under federal OSHA, administered from the OSHA Augusta Area Office. Either way, the powered-industrial-truck standard is the same: 29 CFR 1910.178. Meet it once and your operators are covered statewide.
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), no one may operate a forklift on the job until the employer has trained and evaluated them. Certification is built from three parts:
The employer must keep a written record showing each operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the identity of the trainer/evaluator. Training is truck-specific and site-specific — new equipment or a new hazard means new instruction.
OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator’s performance at least once every three years. Refresher training is also triggered sooner — before three years — whenever an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or the workplace conditions change.
Our $58 online OSHA forklift course satisfies the formal-instruction portion of 29 CFR 1910.178. It takes about an hour, runs on any phone, tablet, or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because federal law requires the hands-on practical training and the workplace evaluation to happen on your actual equipment, those steps stay with the employer — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the evaluation checklists and record forms to complete and document them properly.
