Louisiana Forklift Certification Requirements

Louisiana does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces across the state fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction, administered locally through OSHA’s Baton Rouge Area Office. That means Louisiana forklift operators are trained and certified under the federal Powered Industrial Trucks standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l) — the same rule applied in every non-State-Plan state.

What OSHA requires of Louisiana forklift operators

Federal OSHA does not issue a license or a wallet card. Instead, it requires the employer to certify that each operator has completed a three-part training program before operating a lift truck:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, written material, or an interactive online course covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and hands-on exercises performed by the operator on the actual type of forklift they will run.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor or qualified evaluator watches the operator drive in the real work environment and confirms they can do the job safely.

The employer must then keep a written certification record showing the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date, and the name of the person who did the training and evaluation. In Louisiana this record is what an OSHA compliance officer from the Baton Rouge office will ask to see.

How often re-certification is required in Louisiana

OSHA requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher must also be completed sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course takes about an hour on any phone, tablet, or computer and satisfies the formal-instruction portion of the 29 CFR 1910.178 requirement. It does not — and cannot — replace the hands-on practical training and the on-site workplace evaluation, which OSHA requires the employer to conduct. Our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the evaluation checklist and certification forms to finish those steps and document them properly. The certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

From the Ports of South Louisiana and New Orleans — among the highest-tonnage ports in the nation — to the petrochemical plants and grain terminals lining the Mississippi River corridor, forklift operators keep freight moving in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. Getting the formal training done today is the fastest way to put a compliant, work-ready operator on the floor.
