Kansas Forklift Certification Requirements

Kansas does not run its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces across all 105 Kansas counties fall under federal OSHA, administered from the Wichita Area Office within OSHA’s Region 7, the Kansas City region. That means every Kansas employer follows one national rule for powered industrial trucks: 29 CFR 1910.178(l).

What OSHA requires of Kansas forklift operators

Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), an operator cannot be turned loose on a forklift until the employer certifies they have completed three connected parts of training:

  • Formal instruction — lecture, video, or online coursework covering OSHA rules, truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrians, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and operation of the actual truck by the trainee.
  • Workplace evaluation — the employer watches the operator run the specific equipment in the actual work area and confirms they can do it safely.

The employer must then create a written record showing the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the person who did the training and evaluation. That record is what an OSHA compliance officer from the Wichita office will ask to see.

How often re-certification is required in Kansas

OSHA requires a re-evaluation of each operator at least once every three years. Refresher training must happen sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is seen operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. There is no separate Kansas rule extending or shortening that federal cycle.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course delivers the formal instruction portion of 29 CFR 1910.178(l). It runs about one hour on any phone, tablet, or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years and recognized across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because federal law requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your own equipment, the employer completes those final steps — and our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to document them correctly.
