Start Certification — $58 →Iowa operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Workplace safety in the state is enforced by Iowa OSHA (IOSHA), part of the Iowa Division of Labor within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). Iowa’s State Plan has been federally approved since 1973 and covers both private-sector and state and local government employers. IOSHA adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, so the operator-training rules that apply in Iowa mirror the national OSHA requirements.
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), an operator cannot legally drive a forklift on the job until the employer certifies they have completed a three-part training program:
The employer must keep a written certification record listing the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the trainer or evaluator. IOSHA compliance officers can ask to see this record during an inspection.
Certification is not permanent. Iowa employers must re-evaluate each operator at least once every three years. A refresher and a new evaluation are also required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. There is no separate agricultural exemption from the operator-training rule under Iowa’s plan.
Our $58 online course delivers the formal instruction portion of the requirement. It takes about an hour, works on any phone, tablet, or computer, and your certificate is valid for three years and recognized across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your specific equipment, the employer completes those final steps — our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to finish the job on site.
From grain handling and food processing to John Deere’s ag-equipment plants and the distribution centers around Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport, forklifts keep Iowa moving — and trained, certified operators keep those workplaces compliant and safe.
