Indiana Forklift Certification Requirements

Indiana operates its own OSHA-approved State Plan rather than falling under federal OSHA directly. The program is the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA), administered by the Indiana Department of Labor. IOSHA covers most private-sector employers as well as state and local government workplaces, and it enforces the federal powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178) that governs forklift operator training and certification across the state.

What IOSHA requires of forklift operators

Under IOSHA, an employer may only allow a worker to operate a forklift after that operator has been trained, evaluated, and certified. The standard breaks training into three parts:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style learning covering OSHA rules, truck controls and stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, refueling or charging, and the hazards of the specific workplace. This can be delivered by lecture, written material, video, or online coursework.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and supervised operation of the actual type of forklift the employee will run, performed on-site with the equipment.
  • Workplace evaluation — a designated evaluator watches the operator run the truck in the real work environment and confirms competency before certifying.

The employer must keep a written record for each operator that includes the operator’s name, the trainer’s or evaluator’s name, the date of training, and the date of the evaluation. IOSHA compliance officers can ask to see these records during an inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Indiana

Certification is not permanent. IOSHA requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training must also be provided sooner whenever an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or when conditions in the workplace change in a way that affects safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course satisfies the formal instruction portion of the IOSHA requirement. It takes about an hour, works on any phone, tablet, or computer, and issues a certificate valid for three years and recognized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because the standard requires hands-on practical training and a workplace evaluation on the actual equipment, the employer completes those final steps on-site. Our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit provides the checklists and evaluation forms needed to document that hands-on step and close out a compliant record.

From the RV and manufacturing plants around Elkhart, to the steel mills of northwest Indiana, the auto suppliers near Fort Wayne and South Bend, and the fast-growing distribution and logistics hubs around Indianapolis and Plainfield, forklift operators keep Indiana’s economy moving — and staying certified keeps them working safely and legally.
