Hawaii Forklift Certification Requirements

Hawaii is one of roughly two dozen states that runs its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Workplace safety here is enforced by the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division (HIOSH), part of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR). HIOSH covers most private-sector employers plus state and local government workplaces, and it adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178). In practical terms, the forklift-operator rules an employer must follow on Oahu, Maui, or the Big Island mirror the federal baseline — there is no separate Hawaii-only forklift license.

What HIOSH requires of forklift operators

Under the standard HIOSH enforces, an operator must be trained and evaluated in three connected parts before driving a powered industrial truck on the job:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style teaching of the rules: stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, refueling or charging, inspections, and truck-specific operation.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and actual driving practice performed by the operator.
  • Workplace evaluation — a supervisor watches the operator run the specific truck in the actual work area and confirms competency.

The employer must document the training with the operator’s name, the trainer or evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. That record is what HIOSH looks for during an inspection or after an incident.

How often re-certification is required in Hawaii

HIOSH follows the federal three-year cycle: each operator must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher is also required sooner if the operator is seen driving unsafely, is involved in an accident or near-miss, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online course delivers the formal instruction portion — the classroom knowledge HIOSH expects. It takes about an hour, runs on any phone, tablet, or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The hands-on practical training and the workplace evaluation must still be completed by your employer on your actual equipment; our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to finish those steps on site.

Because the islands depend heavily on imported goods moving through Honolulu Harbor and inter-island freight, forklifts are constant at Hawaii’s harbors, warehouses, and distribution centers — and across construction sites, agriculture, and the hotels and resorts of Honolulu, Maui, and Hilo. (Note: longshoring and marine-terminal work fall under federal OSHA rather than HIOSH, but the warehousing and distribution that supply those cargoes are HIOSH-covered.) Trained operators keep those supply chains moving safely.
