Colorado Forklift Certification Requirements

Colorado does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan for general industry, so private-sector workplaces across the state fall under federal OSHA jurisdiction. Powered industrial truck operators are covered by the federal standard 29 CFR 1910.178, enforced by OSHA’s Denver and Englewood area offices. That means the same national rules apply whether you run a forklift in a Denver distribution center or a Colorado Springs warehouse.

What OSHA requires of Colorado forklift operators

Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), an operator cannot be certified on formal instruction alone. OSHA requires employers to provide and document three distinct parts:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online lessons, video, and a written knowledge test covering truck operation, stability, load handling, and workplace hazards.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and exercises performed by the operator on the actual type of forklift they will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a qualified evaluator watches the operator run the truck in the real work environment and confirms competency before solo operation.

The employer must keep a written certification record listing the operator’s name, the trainer/evaluator’s name, and the dates of training and evaluation. This record must be available for OSHA inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Colorado

Federal OSHA requires each operator to be re-evaluated at least once every three years. A refresher and new evaluation are also triggered sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change. Colorado follows this federal three-year cycle statewide.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course takes about an hour on any phone or computer and satisfies the formal instruction portion of 29 CFR 1910.178. The certificate is valid for three years and is recognized across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA requires hands-on training and a workplace evaluation on your specific equipment, those steps are completed by your employer’s qualified evaluator — our employer Train-and-Certify kit gives supervisors the checklists and evaluation forms to finish and document that step correctly.

From Front Range logistics hubs and Denver-metro distribution to aerospace manufacturing, cannabis cultivation warehouses, and construction supply yards in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Aurora, employers across Colorado rely on trained, OSHA-compliant forklift operators.
