Arizona Forklift Certification Requirements

Arizona does not rely on federal OSHA to police workplace safety. The state runs its own OSHA-approved program, the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH), operated under the Industrial Commission of Arizona. This State Plan has been fully approved since the 1980s and covers both private-sector employers and state and local government workplaces across Arizona. ADOSH adopts the federal powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178) by reference, so the forklift training rules an Arizona employer must meet are the same nationally recognized OSHA requirements — enforced locally by ADOSH inspectors rather than federal ones.

What ADOSH requires of forklift operators

Under the standard ADOSH enforces, an operator cannot be turned loose on a powered industrial truck until the employer has completed three connected steps:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style training covering truck operation, load handling, pedestrian safety, stability, refueling and the hazards of the specific worksite. This can be delivered online, in person or by video.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations by the trainer and supervised practice by the operator on the actual type of forklift they will run.
  • Workplace evaluation — a designated evaluator watches the operator perform in the real work environment and confirms they can do the job safely.

The employer must then keep a written certification record showing the operator’s name, the trainer’s (and evaluator’s) name, the date of training and the date of the evaluation. ADOSH can ask to see that record during an inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Arizona

OSHA and ADOSH require the employer to re-evaluate each operator at least once every three years. A refresher — and a fresh evaluation — is also triggered sooner if the operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if conditions in the workplace change.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 course delivers the formal instruction portion — the classroom knowledge OSHA and ADOSH require. It runs about an hour, works on any phone, tablet or computer, and the certificate is valid for three years and recognized across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Because the standard requires hands-on practice and a workplace evaluation on your actual equipment, the employer completes those final steps; our employer “Train-and-Certify” kit gives supervisors the evaluation checklists and documentation to finish and record them properly.

That structure fits Arizona’s fast-growing workforce — the Phoenix and Mesa distribution and manufacturing boom, new semiconductor plants, and the logistics corridors along I-10 — keeping operators in Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa and Glendale trained and compliant.
