Alabama Forklift Certification Requirements

Alabama does not operate its own OSHA-approved State Plan. Private-sector workplaces across the state fall under federal OSHA, enforced locally through the Birmingham Area Office and the Mobile Area Office. That means Alabama forklift operators are certified under the federal Powered Industrial Truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l) — the same rule applied nationwide.

What OSHA requires of Alabama forklift operators

Federal OSHA does not issue licenses or a national “forklift card.” Instead, the employer must train and certify each operator before that person drives a powered industrial truck on the job. Certification has three required parts:

  • Formal instruction — classroom-style or online lessons covering truck controls, stability, load handling, pedestrian safety, refueling, and the specific hazards of the operator’s worksite.
  • Practical training — hands-on demonstrations and supervised practice on the actual type of forklift the operator will use.
  • Workplace evaluation — a qualified evaluator watches the operator run the truck in the real work environment and confirms competency.

The employer must keep a written certification record listing the operator’s name, the training and evaluation dates, and the name of the trainer/evaluator. OSHA can request this record during an inspection.

How often re-certification is required in Alabama

Operators must be re-evaluated at least once every three years. Refresher training is required sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss, is observed operating unsafely, is assigned a different type of truck, or if changes in the workplace could affect safe operation.

Where our online course fits

Our $58 online OSHA forklift course satisfies the formal instruction portion of 1910.178 and takes about an hour on any phone or computer. On passing, you receive a certificate valid for three years across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because OSHA requires hands-on practice and a workplace evaluation on the specific equipment, the employer completes those final steps — made simple with our employer Train-and-Certify kit, which supplies the evaluation forms and checklists to finish compliance.

From the auto plants at Mercedes-Benz in Vance, Honda in Lincoln, Hyundai in Montgomery, and Mazda-Toyota in Huntsville, to the docks at the Port of Mobile, the aerospace corridor in Huntsville, and the steel yards of Birmingham, safe forklift operation keeps Alabama moving.
